Moon Valley Country Club was once the host venue to the LPGA on its annual visit to the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was the backdrop to Annika’s infamous 59. But times change and the private facility elected to pass on hosting the event. In fact, its management company, Troon Golf, recently went to the Internet with an email blast soliciting “limited” opportunities to join the Moon for a $10,000 initiation fees.
While it is looking for a few more folks to pay the monthly dues, which it lists at $572, across the valley it was announced that Papago, a municipal facility will be the next host site for the LPGA tournament. “The Phoenix event has long been one of the most popular and storied stops on the LPGA Tour, with past champions ranging from Betsy King to Laura Davies to Annika Sorenstam to, most recently, Lorena Ochoa,” remarked LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens.
