It seems everyone wants to be like Fred Couples. He is the closest thing to golf’s Mr. Cool. He was paired with Jordan Spieth in the first round of the Northern Trust, who wasn’t even born before Couples made it on the PGA TOUR. Couples transcends generation gap. Age seems to be no barrier for him. Case in point, Ray Floyd, age 71, was named a vice-captain for the upcoming Ryder Cup. “He was a mentor a long time ago,” said Couples who added he was excited about the decision. “We sat down one night and he said, ‘Just cut one shot off every round you play.’ And I said, ‘How would you do that, by making another 5-foot putt somewhere?’ He said, ‘No, that's not what I see. I think you need to play the par 5s differently,’ and I started listening to that and I started playing a little smarter. I started to cut off some shots that had nothing to do with making 5-foot putts. To see him being chosen by Tom Watson, that's a great choice.”
