Word on the tee is that two-time British Open champion Padraig Harrington has made a change in equipment. The reigning PGA Champ has put Wilson Golf’s new Smooth driver (yet to be introduced) in his bag. The reason for the change is believed to be an increase in ball speed, said to be 3-4 mph off the clubhead. According to Wilson’s PR company, Kemper Sports, the Irishman put the Smooth driver in play at the 2008 Barclays Championship. The timing is somewhat curious. Not that Harrington is changing up drivers, just that Kemper decided to issue a press release the Monday after he failed to make the cut while using it. Its believed that Wilson reps have begun showing the product to retail accounts. The Smooth is expected to be available later this year.
