VOLUME 1, NUMBER 238

Thursday, December 9, 2010

ANY IDEA WHO SAID THIS? “No. 1 is to win the tournament, and No. 2 is to have a bit of fun. If the case arises, we may just turn that around and we'll have more fun instead of winning the tournament. We'll see.”

ON THIS DAY: In 1990, Fred Couples and Mike Donald combined to win the Sazale Classic.

STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Much like its namesake, the Bob Hope Classic is an institution on the PGA TOUR. While it doesn’t resonate today the way it once did, the event has fallen on some tough times. Sponsorship dollars haven’t been as plentiful as they were once upon a time when American presidents could be counted on teeing it up in the annual event. However, it has found a company willing to lend a helping hand.

Franklin American Mortgage Company (FAMC) has agreed to a multi-year sponsorship with the Bob Hope Classic, whose 52nd edition takes place Jan. 17-23. Franklin American’s decision comes following its first-time participation in it earlier this year. The financials are three years and $1.5 million. Not enough for title level but nonetheless every little bit (if it can be classified as such) helps.

“We had a wonderful experience in 2010 and we are looking forward to our expanded role going forward with the Bob Hope Classic,” said Dan Crockett, CEO and president of Franklin American Mortgage Company. ”The Classic is one of the iconic events on the PGA TOUR and is a wonderful marketing platform for FAMC.”

WORKING TOGETHER: The PGA TOUR and United Continental Holdings, Inc. (UAL: NYSE) have reached a five-year marketing partnership that aligns both carriers to the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour starting in 2011. United Continental Holdings is the holding company for Continental and United as the carriers complete the integration process to create the world’s leading airline. The “Official Airline” designation will pass to United as the integration process advances. The new partnership, which runs 2011-2015, will provide both airlines’ frequent flier members the opportunity to obtain special PGA TOUR-related benefits, including:

· Unique PGA TOUR player experiences

· PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour tournaments

· Private and semi-private hospitality areas at select tournaments

· PGA TOUR’s TPC Network of golf facilities and courses

LET’S MAKE A DEAL: Matteo Manassero has a new endorsement deal. The rising star inked a sponsorship deal with Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. The 17-year old, is the youngest full European Tour member and the youngest to win a European Tour event. The tourism authority believes that adding the young golfer to its stable will not only attract golfers to Abu Dhabi but may also encourage local youth to take up the sport. READ MORE>>>

V FORE VICTORY: Nike Golf is adding the VR Pro Fairway woods to its VR Pro line in 2011. The fairway woods will be equipped with the Variable Compression Channel and the STR8-FIT face angle technology. According to the company, the new Variable Full Compression Channel on the VR Pro fairway woods increases speed at impact in more spots on the clubface, therefore delivering greater distance on a variety of shots.

“The work with our tour staff lead us to a fairway wood which is hotter over a larger area of the face and has a flatter sole for ease off of tight lies,” said Nike Golf’s Director of Production Creation Tom Stites.  “The STR8-FIT Tour adapter allows us to position the head precisely where the player wants it which maximizes visual confidence and performance.”

Availability for the VR Pro fairway wood and 32 options to customize the club face angle via the STR8-FIT Tour technology is slated for February 3, 2011. It carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $275.99

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: No announcement is expected until the New Year, far later than has been the case in recent times. Pavin was appointed in December two years ago, predecessors Paul Azinger and Tom Lehman in November and before them Hal Sutton, Curtis Strange and Ben Crenshaw were all unveiled only a month after the previous match. Favorite to do the job at Medinah in Chicago in 2012 is Davis Love, one of Pavin’s assistants in the one-point defeat at Celtic Manor in October. READ MORE>>>

NOT IF BUT WHEN: Lee Westwood finishes the year as the #1 player in the world but with it comes high expectations going forward. Colin Montgomerie is already calling for Westwood to win the Masters and Europe to replicate the Tiger Slam. READ MORE>>>
